Dazzling individual performance, UWS debuts highlight first weekend of UWS action

Central Conference 

Great Lakes Division 

Sunday, May 15 

Corktown Hawks 5, Michigan Jaguars 0 

Corktown Hawks began their season with a comfortable, 5-0 victory over UWS newcomers Michigan Jaguars, who held tough following Kacy Lauer’s early opener but conceded four goals in the second half. Regan Dancer began her season with a hat trick for Corktown Hawks.  Peighton Northrup also found the target, while Maya Carter displayed her playmaking prowess with a trio of assists. 

Nationals FC 8, Cap City Athletic 1 

Jenna Blackburn’s hat trick highlighted this clash of two UWS debutants, with Nationals FC coating to a commanding 8-1 victory. Nationals FC scored three times in the first half to establish itself comfortably in the driver’s seat by the break, and piled on five more goals after the intermission. Megan Scholten tallied the first UWS goal for Cap City Athletic to get the visitors on the scoreboard late. 

Heartland Division 

Saturday, May 14 

FC Wichita 3, Side FC 92 0

FC Wichita claimed a heavy advantage throughout most of this opening contest in the shot column, but it took 70 minutes before it translated to the scoreboard. Lina Fasquelle finally broke through the stout Side FC defense with a shot from distance to open the floodgates. Grace Linton followed with a spot-kick before Khloe Shuckman converted an excellent cross from Hinata Kojima to conclude the scoring in the 90th minute. 

Sunday, May 15 

KC Courage 1, Sporting Nebraska 0 

A battle of attrition broke out in Kansas City on Sunday, with defensive structure and strong goalkeeping emerging as a major theme. KC Courage needed a 68th-minute penalty to undo Sporting Nebraska, playing in its first contest at the UWS level. Courtney Claassen converted from the spot to give the hosts the win, and Kaylin Williams started her season off with a clean sheet in goal. 

East Conference 

New England Division 

Saturday, May 14 

CT Fusion 8, Worcester Smiles 0 

The defending East Conference champions and national runners-up began the 2022 season with a statement. Kacey Lawrence scored a hat trick and added an assist, while Tori Sousa and Brenna Brown each contributed a brace in an 8-0 romp over Worcester Smiles. 

NE Mutiny 1, Scorpions SC 0

A tight, defensive contest between NE Mutiny and Scorpions SC yielded only one goal on Saturday, with NE Mutiny emerging as 1-0 winners. Scorpions SC initially held firm under a barrage of 15 shots from the opposition, but in the 48th minute NE Mutiny secured the breakthrough it had pushed for. Zoie Allen fed Alyssa Hyland, who desposted her shot in the top corner for the only goal of the match. 

South Conference 

Southwest Division 

Saturday, May 14 

FC Austin Elite 2, Luxoria FC 1 

Luxoria FC’s start to life in UWS began auspiciously, as Bronwyn Boswell fired home in the eighth minute after a feed from Mikayla Uyokpeyi to set the hosts up with a 1-0 lead early. Ryann Hierholzer responded swiftly for FC Austin Elite, though, equalizing in the 13th minute. Junique Rodriguez produced the decisive goal in the second half, allowing FC Austin Elite to complete the opening-day comeback. 

Sunday, May 15 

SA Runners 2, WilCo FC 0 

An impressive UWS debut saw SA Runners excel at both ends of the pitch, claiming an inaugural 2-0 victory over WilCo FC. Kimberly Sepulveda tallied SA Runners’ first goal at the UWS level in the 18th minute to put her side ahead early. The hosts spent the remainder of the match nullifying WilCo FC’s attack, limiting them to five shots on target. Melanie Chandler sealed the points with an insurance goal in the 78th minute.
